Carpet fibers hold allergenic bacteria and other unhealthy agents such as dust, dust mites, mold, mildew, dirt and grime. Hardwood floors are as much as 80 percent cleaner and healthier than floors with carpet. In addition, real-estate professionals agree that homes with hardwood floors sell faster and for more money than homes with carpet.

Of course, hardwood floors also add long-lasting beauty and elegance to your home. Call Northstate Hardwood Floors today to learn more about the many benefits of hardwood floors or to request and estimate on hardwood floor installation or refinishing for your home or business.

Northstate Hardwood Floors has been a Fisher Construction partner for close to three years. The company installs hardwood flooring in the homes of Fisher Construction clients, working on projects from one room to whole home installations. “We can always rely upon Northstate Hardwood Floors for the highest quality product, installation and services,” says Fisher Construction owner Peter Valentino.

A resurgence of interest in hardwood floors over the past several years is due to a variety of factors, according to Marty Calvert: “People are ripping up their carpeting of formica to replace it with hardwood because hardwood flooring is so much easier to maintain,” Marty says, “It makes for a cleaner look and feel in the home environment, and it’s beautiful, too.”

Northstate Hardwood Floors has been privileged to work with many companies in the area. Red Carpet Realty, Bpwser Const., Carpet One Floor & Home Design, Chinberg Construction Inc., Custom Restorations Inc. A.S.B. Properties Investments as well as all of our wonderful home-owners. Refrences are available, so call if you need our services we are always available.

While oak remains the classic choice for flooring, other woods such as Brazillian Cherry or Walnut, with their darker, more exotic finishes, have grown in popularity recently. Hardwood can be used in every room in the home, from the kitchen to the bathroom, and installed over any surface, even concrete in the basement. These days there is a wood for every d├ęcor and almost every budget. Fisher Construction clients can select from a wide range of hardwoods to find one that integrates best with their remodel.

Marty appreciates working with Fisher Construction because of their strong relationships with clients and vendors. “They are nice people, good people to work for, and they treat you well,” he says.

4 Potential Home Plumbing Problems

Most people take their home plumbing for granted. When they turn on the faucet, water appears. The drains and toilets work without any problem. But when plumbing problems begin to appear, that's when many homeowners begin to panic.

Here are four signs that your plumbing has problems, things you can do to try to fix the problem, and when it's time to call a professional plumber.

The never-ending drip

A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year. If you are leaking hot water, you are paying for wasted energy as well. But ignoring the problem leads to a lot of wasted water and higher water bills. Small leaks can be a symptom of other plumbing problems. Fixing a leaky faucet may be something a homeowner can fix. But if there are questions as to the cause of the leak, it's better to have a plumber check it out.

The drain that works too slowly

If your sink or tub takes too long to drain, the problem may be caused by hair or another blockage. There are products designed to break up and clear stopped up drains. However, overuse of these chemicals can damage your pipes. For a stubborn or recurring blockage, you may need the help of a professional plumber who can use tools such as a drain snake to fix the problem.

Toilet trouble

Toilets often back up, and sewage lines become stopped up from time to time. Sometimes this may be caused by a small blockage that can be cleared with a plunging. Serious problems may exist if the blockages become a regular problem, or the water in your toilet bowl fills up too high or too low. If your toilet makes unusual sounds, or your smell foul odors, this may also indicate a sewage problem. You'll want to call a plumber in this instance.

Water appears in all the wrong places

Never underestimate the damage that water can create. Even small leaks can eventually cause structural damage to structures and create conditions that may lead to mold growth. Leaking sewer pipes can seep water through basement floors and walls. If you notice water or dampness, and you cannot trace the source, it's time to contact your local plumber.

Your kitchen accounts for about ten percent of your household water consumption. Do regular maintenance checks of your kitchen pipes. Check for water stains or leaks under your sink and near the walls.

Common home plumbing problems are usually just an inconvenience. However, if a leak or stoppage is not fixed, it can lead to larger, more expensive problems down the road.

Does a Roof Need Repair or Replacement?

The roofs on our houses are easy to ignore and forget about. They are not at eye level and we do not come in contact with them every day like we do our bathrooms, kitchens, or other interior spaces and fixtures. We often make minor repairs inside the home - to kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, wall damage, and other minor defects. We also fix items in the yard, such as sprinkler heads when we see them, but the often forget about the roof of our house until it is too late.

If you haven't inspected your roof in a long time, or perhaps you never have inspected it, it may not be too late to start. Depending on the age of your roof, it may already have minor damage or leaks. There are some signs to look for that may mean your roof needs to be replaced.
  • Water damage. If you see brown spots on any of your ceilings, it may be a sign of extensive water damage, or a possible issue with your gutter system.
  • Bats in your belfry? If you have small birds or an army of insects in your attic, you may have severe problems with your roof.
  • Noticeable shingle damage. A few damaged shingles may not be bad, but if you see a number of curled or cracked shingles, this may be a sure sign that the roof needs top be replaced.
If you see any of the signs, it is crucial that you contact a roofing professional. A contractor will come out to your home to determine the best option for your roof. It is advisable to get two or three opinions to make sure that what they say is the best option, is actually the best option for you and not the contractor. The vast majority of roofing contractors are reliable and ethical, but a few bad apples sometimes spoils the bunch.

If you do need to replace your roof, there are a few options.
  • Metal roof. This type of roof is energy efficient and the most eco-friendly option. It is also not prone to insect infestations.
  • Asphalt shingles. This option is the most common and often the most budget-friendly. Most contractor are very comfortable using this type of material and many offer good warranties on both their work and the material.
  • Slate. This type of natural stone roof looks great and can last for 40-45 years. More expensive than others, but the look and longevity is a selling point.
Though the roof of a home is often forgotten about, it should not be ignored. It should be inspected annually and repairs should be made as needed. Proper maintenance will add years to the life of a roof, but if the damage is severe, it is important to replace the roof as quickly as possible to avoid any further water damage to your home.

Cleaning Fire Damage - A Difficult Process Without Proper Training

When a home or business is struck by a fire, the damage to the building remains even after the fire is extinguished. At this time of tragedy, the last thing that property owners need to be worried about is cleaning fire damage. Hiring a professional to perform this difficult task can provide peace of mind to property owners because they can relax, knowing that the job is being done effectively and in a timely manner. Professionals have the training and the tools that are needed to properly clean up after a fire and restore the building and contents safely.

Some types of materials create chemical reactions after they have been burned, so it is important that they are cleaned quickly. If they are not cleaned fast enough or with the proper types of agents, the items could become unsafe in just a matter of days. Without the proper equipment, cleaning fire damage is a long and difficult process. This is another reason why it is best to call on the professionals. They know how to clean even the most delicate items and they clean them in a way that prevents future problems, such as mold, from occurring.

Restoring a home or a business after a fire is extremely physically demanding, especially without good equipment. In many cases, even the wood and the walls in the building need to be cleaned in order to prevent future problems. For individuals without the proper training and equipment, this process takes a great deal of time and energy. Without the proper fire damage cleaning experience, it can also be done incorrectly, which will only cause problems later on down the road. The potential issues that can result from this can be hazardous to the health of those who occupy the building. Professionals can eliminate the need for future repairs, while saving the property owner time, energy, and money.

Many property owners want to take cleaning fire damage upon themselves in order to save money, but end up finding that it is much too difficult for them to take on alone. Rather than wasting the energy, it is best to put the process in the hands of true professionals who will get the job done right the first time.

Why Only An Electrician Should Upgrade Your Service Panel

Electrical demands created by modern technology put more stress on older electrical systems. Also, insurance companies have started to deny renewals to homes equipped with electric panels that have been known to cause electrical fires and have not been replaced by an electrician.

A service panel distributes electricity throughout a building. The service panel divides the power coming from a source and feeds it into different circuits. A fuse or circuit breaker protects each circuit in the home. The panel contains a main power switch and several breakers that provide overload protection.

Homeowners who need to change their electric panel must have a licensed electrician change it out. Replacing a panel involves entirely removing the old panel and replacing it with one that meets with current code standards. Many old service panels are now inadequate. They create dangerous safety hazards that homeowners do not know about.

Homes that do have a more modern service panel may need an upgrade. Homeowners may find an upgrade necessary when buying new appliances that put higher demands on the electrical system. An electrical panel has a lifespan of between 20 to 25 years. When homeowners start experiencing flickering lights and can feel heat coming the panel, it is time to call an electrician for an upgrade. In some situations, circuit breakers deteriorate to the point where they burn out. Waiting too long to replace an old system runs the risk of the electrical panel shutting down or possibly causing a house fire.

Having an electrician replace or rebuild your present electrical service panel will prevent many problems in the future. In most situations, a complete replacement will cost less than constantly making repairs. Homeowners need to check with their insurance company to learn about the requirements to reduce their premiums for making electrical upgrades. Typically, both utility bill reductions as well as insurance cost savings will easily justify the investment in a panel change out.

When upgrading to a modern service panel system, it may be necessary to have an electrician rewire the entire building to meet the increased electrical demands, replace ancient wiring and improve energy efficiency.

Electrical upgrades are governed by local building code regulations. Many electrical repairs, installations and repairs must be inspected and approved. Because of the skill and knowledge it takes to upgrade a service panel, only a licensed and experienced electrician can do it safely and efficiently.

Psychology Behind Where You Stand When You Get In An Elevator

Elevators are curious things. I know people who are deathly afraid of getting in them. After seeing all the movies where the elevator falls uncontrollably and everybody screams, I can understand why they are scary to some people. Other people love them. I remember about a year ago when I wrote about a Glass-Floored Bathroom built over a 15-story elevator shaft. I’m still not sure I would use that bathroom. Today I’d like to talk about the psychology behind where you stand when you get in an elevator.

You may not have ever even thought about it before, but there is a social hierarchy regarding who stands where in an elevator. Rebekah Rousi, who is working on her Ph.D., researched elevator behavior. Her findings are fascinating, and they suggest that the psychology behind where we stand in an elevator is anything but random.

In a nutshell, older men seem to stand at the back of the elevator, younger men typically stand in the middle, and women (regardless of age) usually stand in front of everyone, right behind the elevator door. The second thing she noticed is that men will look around at everyone in the elevator, while women usually avoid eye contact. The question is, what does all this mean?

You can read Rebekah’s research paper on this topic here on Ethnography Matters. She tells NPR that she doesn’t know why these patterns exist, they just do. It could be a power thing, since the senior men at the back have a view of everyone. It could be more simple that that. Maybe it just comes down to shyness. The psychology behind it all is still a mystery. So the next time you get in an elevator, instead of being annoyed by the kid who pushes all the buttons or the person talking loudly on a phone, check out where everyone is standing. Do you follow this pattern?

Psychology Behind Where You Stand In An Elevator

Concrete Pool Decks Are the Perfect Flooring Option For Your Backyard

When imagining a pool deck, most people probably envision a wood deck surrounding an above ground pool, or a boring flat or brushed concrete patio surrounding an inground. Or maybe some of us wish we could afford a beautiful natural stone pool deck matching up to the exterior of our homes, similar to that guy's down the street. Guess what? You can afford that! The fact of the matter is that guy down the street with that amazing stone deck most likely opted for the less expensive stamped concrete decking, patterned to mimic the natural stone he wanted and colored or stained to his specifications.

Decorative concrete pool decks are one of the biggest trends in outdoor living right now. The fact is concrete can be textured, patterned, stenciled and colored to mimic just about any other material more commonly associated with patios and decks. As outdoor living becomes more of a lifestyle for many of us during warmer months, people are installing gorgeous concrete pool decks as an extension of their home interior. Recently, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals stated that statistics show that most people spend more time on their pool decks than actually doing the backstroke. I read that statement and initially thought there is no way people with pools are not spending time IN the pool itself. Then I realized although pool owners do jump in, they also tend to sunbathe, dine, socialize, and read on the deck. Most of their time spent at their pool is actually spent poolside. So it makes perfect sense to design your pool with the perfect concrete pool deck to suit your needs, both aesthetically and functionally.

Now that you know your concrete pool deck can be designed to look how you want, it is time to think about function. During the design stage, it is important to note that although the deck looks and acts like a patio, there are some design elements to incorporate. Pool decks should be slip-resistant, reflect the sun and oriented properly around the pool. Another thing to decide is if you want it to function as another "room" of your home. It is quite common for homeowners to design a section to encompass barbeque grills, fire pits, dining and some even install entire outdoor kitchens.
